walking slow in the protest @ Hong Kong on 25/3/2017

it was 4pm , when i was leaving home and planned to go to visit Art Basel or the performance in empty gallery.
On the way to Mtr, I decided to go for the performance in empty gallery instend of visiting Art Basel.
During the days in March, it was a blossom of art events in Hong Kong because of Art Basel in Wanchai. I felt a bit dizzy during that period .
When I was going to the bus stop for the transit, I was passing by a huge group of protester near to the sogo apartment store. They draw my whole attention and make me changed my mind to join the walk as well.

I didn’t voice any slogan during the protest. I just walked slowly as I can at the last part of the queue. And I found that there was a woman who have the same intention as me to walk slowly. We have several moments that we walk side by side and  I felt we have the same tempo . We didnt talk to each other but I felt that we quite enjoy the slow tempo. There are few times that the police use the louder speaker to warn us to walk faster. The male police in the car drive after me,who keep voice out “the lady with blue muslin dress and a brown color bag, yes! that’s you! You are the obstacle of the bus behind you ” OF course ! I don’t walk fast by their command as i felt that i m in the state of walking slow. However, the police tried to drive closly to us . One male police warn me and said”that’s a car, watch out!”, but i replied him”I m Human , watch out!”

I was quite enjoy the walk on the car road slowly and feeling the atmosphere in the city. It just like a soundwalk as I helded before. I was thinking about what if I could held a sound walk during the protest in the context of Art Basel. To invite those foreign buyers, curators etc etc to have a soundwalk in this moody atmosphere.  I imagined the sound of high-heel shoes mixed with the voice of protest and the voice of the police warning.

After an hour, the woman talked to me. She asked me to be careful as the policeman would trick as the protest didnt apply for notification of public meeting. At that moment, the police car driven beyond us and forced us to walk on the pavement, and control the tempo of our walk. I walked a bit faster and catch up the last queue.
However, I cannot enjoy the tempo as they controlled, then I leave the queue and heading to ACO.

Slow is a sin in this fast responds city and era.

The Third Space (1) :Sai Wan Winter Camp

The Third Space (1): Sai Wan Winter Camp

The Third Space
is an invitational programme series that introduces alternative learning platforms to re-imagine art education. By creating an open space for independent thought, we activate and engage in environments beyond the boundaries of home and workplace. Through the programme, participants establish a new sense of space and belonging in the city while making connections between art and society.

Invited co-organiser for the inaugural programme Michael Leung gravitates towards places where communities voluntarily gather, root, and responsibly thrive. He also believes in alternative learning platforms that bring students to places outside of conventional classrooms.

PRE-CAMP

Leading up to Sai Wan Winter Camp, a series of public programmes provides an opportunity for a wider audience to engage in the themes to be explored during camp. It is also a chance for camp participants to prepare their mindsets and build knowledge prior to the trip. More.

WINTER CAMP

Blog | ProgrammeWritten Responses | Resources

In this year’s Sai Wan Winter Camp, participants pitch tents in Sai Wan Sai Kung. What does it mean to inhabit public space? In open space, how can we engage with sounds—something that has no discernible substance or mass? Can we be conscious of the way we consume and make sense of everyday objects to rediscover our understanding of the world?

Sai Wan village is one of the last heritage settlements of Hong Kong due to historical and geographical factors. Disputes about the usage of the land erupted in 2010 among indigenous Sai Wan villagers, the government’s Agriculture Fisheries and Conservation Department, and a private investor. Leung has been exploring salt-making and sustainable living alongside local villagers in Sai Wan, and through active collective engagement, the programme prompts us to question and examine public space and civic culture, reflect on our relationship to the environment, and reconnect with nature. More.

POST-CAMP

A series of post-camp programmes generated by participants, artists, and other arts organisations to extend discussions from the camp back to the city. More.

2 guided soundwalks
led by Lee Wing-shan Fiona & Au Wing-yan Step

– hosted by soundpocket as part of the MaD’s programme “Studio in-Situ: Among Mountains and Streams”

Artists Lee Wing-shan Fiona and Au Wing-yan Step will take us on soundwalks around Sha Tin and Shek Kip Mei respectively. They had designed these exercises for the ear to listen to the chacha sounds of the running water of the Shing Mun River, the rustle of the leaves in the trees and the twinkling tips of trees.

Perfect Whisper – led by Lee Wing-shan Fiona
May 19 (Sunday), 2013 | 7:00 – 9:00am
Fiona says, “In the morning in the city, you can hear sounds made from different biological activities. They are the whisper of the morning and waking up of the city. No one is nosier than anyone else. In fact, the birds have been calling to start the day while you’re sleeping; and breakfast is already prepared for you. Let’s slow down and feel the space and sounds in this city”.

Aging Wood – led by Au Wing-yan Step
May 19 (Sunday), 2013 | 9:00am – 11:00am
Step says, “At the age of fourteen, I joined a tree therapy programme organized by a religious group. In a journey to the forest, I was introduced to the way of tranquilizing human mind through interacting with plantations there. During the soundwalk, I would like to examine how human perceive the sound of trees in our imagination and in reality”.
